This organ secretes digestive
enzymes and hormones. It is beneath
the stomach and is connected to the
small intestine at the duodenum.
The pancreas contains enzymeproducing
cells that secrete two
hormones- insulin and glucagon.
Insulin and glucagon are secreted
directly into the bloodstream, and
together, they regulate the level of
glucose in the blood.
Insulin lowers
the blood sugar level and increases
the amount of glycogen (stored
carbohydrate) in the liver. Glucagon
slowly increases the blood sugar
level if it falls too low. Diabetes
occurs if the insulin secreting cells
do not work properly.
The pancreas also helps neutralize
chyme (a thick semi- fluid mass of
partly digested food that is passed
from the stomach to the duodenum)
and helps break down proteins, fats
and starches. If the pancreas is not
working properly to neutralize
chime, and break down proteins, fats
and starch, starvation may occur.
Methods for cleansing and helping the organ recover
- Eat less sugar products and
simple carbohydrates for the
next few days. - Ease consumption of protein
because this makes the
pancreas work more. - Consume smaller portions
more often during the day.
Eating small amounts every
1-2 hours may be beneficial.
Eat foods that contain
chromium to help balance
your sugar levels. - Avoid drinking liquids with
your meals. It is best to drink
fluids 45-60 minutes before
or after meals. - Avoid spicy foods while
trying bland foods, which
may be better tolerated.
Foods that are cold or warm
may be easier to digest than
hot foods.
