The liver is the largest organ housed inside the body. It is located to
the right of the stomach and rests behind the lower ribs and below the
lungs.
The liver performs more than 400 functions daily to keep the
body healthy. The liver converts food into nutrients the body can use
such as producing bile to break down fats.
Bile is a fluid produced by
the liver, stored in the gallbladder, and released into the small intestine
to help absorb dietary fats. The liver also stores fats, sugars, iron, and
vitamins for use by the body as needed.
The liver makes the proteins
needed for normal blood clotting. Additionally, the liver has the lifesaving
job of removing or chemically changing drugs, alcohol, and
other substances that may be harmful or toxic to the body.
Just as with the kidneys, the liver helps ensure a safe chemical balance
within our bodies. Again, if the liver cannot perform its jobs well, it
will resort to other organs for help. With respect to acne, we want the
liver to be able to keep the blood clean; otherwise we could have an
unwanted onset of acne-flare- ups.
Foods that help the liver perform at its optimum level include:
Apple juice, blueberries (helps purify blood), beets, casaba (blood
purifier), cucumbers (blood cooler), dandelion greens (liver
cleanser), grapes (blood purifier), horseradish (liver cleanser),
lemons (blood cooler) radishes, mustard greens, muskmelon (blood
cooler), pomegranate juice (blood cleanser).
