How to Prevent An Onslaught of Bumps and Ingrown Hairs When Epilating, Waxing or Shaving

    By Naweko San-Joyz | November 21, 2009

Just the other day when I was browsing through the cosmetics section of the 99 Cents Store, (try this some time by the way) I came across a post eyebrow tweezing treatment that aimed to reduce the appearance of bumps after tweezing. After a quick glance at the ingredients list, I noted the product contained witch hazel and aloe vera juice. “Umm,” I mused, “so witch hazel and aloe vera juice must be good for preventing tweezing bumps?”But there’s a whole lot more you can do to prevent the arrival of skin bumps after you remove hair no matter if you are shaving, epilating or waxing, the same rules apply for stopping hair bumps before they start.

When to Prevent Post Hair Removal Bumps

To avoid an uprising of hair bumps, you just need to plan how you will treat your skin

  • Before
  • During and
  • After
  • the hair removal process. YouTips4U has done a great job of explaining how to prevent the bumps and/or ingrown hairs the come from following rushed hair removal routines to avoid. Here are some high lights from her video:

    Before Hair Removal

Prepare and open your hair follicles for easier, gentler hair removal by warming the skin. You can do this with a warm shower or by applying a warm cloth to the skin.

    During Hair Removal

Always remove hair in the direction of hair growth. Cassia McClain, over at skinbiology.com, wrote an excellent article and offers a clear image of how to remove hair in the direction of growth so as to minimize ingrown hairs. Do not pull your hair to remove it or this will irritate your hair follicle and definitely result in bumps or worse, scarring.

    After Hair Removal

Prevent pore blockage from dead skin build up by cleansing the area with products that contain salicylic acid and/or witch hazel. You can even wash your body with a dandruff shampoo because you can find such products that contain 3% salicylic acid as the active ingredient. You can also find plain witch hazel in drug stores as well, usually in the first-aid section.
