A DIY Alternative to Brazilian Wax and Bikini Waxing

    By Naweko San-Joyz | October 21, 2009

OK, I have not paid anybody to give me a Brazilian wax yet because so far, I’ve been too cheap to do it and for whatever reason, I don’t want some stranger pulling off my pubic hair. All the same, I still crave a hair-free pubic area. So, I stopped playing around and bought a hair epilator to give me that waxed look without the waxing difficulties. In short, what I’m proposing here is that instead of getting a Brazilian bikini wax, you can build up your tolerance to giving yourself a DIY Bikini Pluck.Forewarned is forearmed so here comes your Fair Warning first.Using an epilator on your pubic area will feel like massive torture. So, you’ll have to dampen that pain, and I’ll show you how. Also, suddenly plucking your pubic hair from the root instead of shaving or using a cream depilatory will shock your hair follicles and trigger a slew of bikini bumps. Yep, we’ll discuss a fix for that too. But, should you choose to overcome the primary challenges, bumps and pains that will accompany using an epilator to remove your pubic hair, overtime, you will enjoy a bush-free genital area, finer pubic hair, less bikini bumps, and save a stash of cash on bikini waxing. If you’d like a visual aid to help you imagine yourself performing your own epilation, do see thatsyourface’s video. She does a great job of welcoming newbies to the art of epilation, please she has nifty tips your her own epilating experiences. With that briefing, lets move on to getting stocked and ready to turn that thick, unruly pubic hair into strategically and sensuously crafted bald spots.

What you need to Bikini Plucker your pubic area

    Get a hair epilator

I just want to say that I waited over six months before I mustarded up the courage to buy an epilator, I was just scared that that little machine with tiny little metal teeth would rip my skin to pieces and hurt like a 100 bee stings. But that was not entirely the case. Now that I have an epilator, I feel like those people who finally get LASIK eye surgery done and want to punch themselves in the face for waiting so long to finally do it because the results are so good. So, don’t wait to buy an epilator. You can get one for under $25 and use in on you legs, face, arms, underarms, and of course, your bikini area.

    Finding a skin numbing agent

Like I wrote earlier ladies and gentlemen, pulling your pubic hair out for the first couple of times hurts, and it hurts deeply. To mitigate this pain, you can use skin numbing agents that contain drugs like procaine or benzocaine. You can find such products at your local drug store in the first-aid section and in the hair removal section. Before you by a numbing agent, look at the percentage of the pain relieving agent. It may be between 2-5%, you can even get percentages as high as 20% online. The point is, the higher the pain relieving percentage, the more effective the product should be at reducing the torture of hair plucking.

    Steps to Bikini Plucking

Step 1: Trimming the hair down

The first thing that you want to do to your pubic area before bikini plucking ensuring that your hair is at the ideal length for removing with an epilator. In most instances this length is five millimeters (5mm) or one-fifth of an inch (0.20 in). Trim your hair to the length recommended by the epilator manufacturer. You can trim the hair with clippers or scissors. You want to trim down your hair to this length because if the hair is too long, the epilator will end up pulling the long hairs and breaking them in half and instead of pulling the hairs up from the root. Plus, having your hair too long will only cause more pain for you.

    Step 2: Cleansing the area

After the excess hair is gone, use a warm, clean wash cloth to cleanse the pubic area. This will help reduce infection and open your skin so as to make removing the hair a bit easier.

Step 3: Apply a numbing agent

Next, apply your preferred numbing agent to your skin. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer, but usually after the lotion or astringent has been on your skin for 5-10 minutes, your skin will be numb enough to begin bikini plucking.

    Step 4: The epilating

Now the moment we’ve been waiting for, removing your hair. Again, this will sound like a skipping CD, but you have to follow the directions offered by the epilator manufacturer. Typically, you turn on the epilator, hold it over the skin and move it in circular motions over the skin. With each swipe, the epilator removes more and more hair, until the skin is bald.

Step 5: Apply bump reducing agent

As you go from shaving to epilating, your skin will be mad a you for a while and bumps will manifest as evidence of this angst. That’s why the next step to your bikini plucking is applying a bump numbing agent. Bumps may rise up because the hair bulb of pubic hairs are relatively large. This bulbs irritate the skin as they leave. Plus, at first, your pubic hair will be thick, but with continued epilating, the hair will grow finer and hurt a lot less when you remove it with an epilator.Just recall how much it hurt when you first started waxing or plucking your eyebrows. Now, plucking them is so painless, you can do it while driving, but please don’t.So, rub on a bump reducing lotion for now and help save yourself from an onslaught of bikini pumps.

Extra tip Be gentle with your skin. Granted, epilating thick hair lends itself to torture, if you repeatedly try to pluck the same hair 10 times with no success, you are going to create bikini bumps no matter how much bump reducing lotion you use. So, give yourself and your skin time to adjust to epilating and eventually, you can remove hairs from the root with minimal pain and bumps.

    Step 6: Review and adjust

After your first pubic epilating experience, you should decide a few things. First, was your numbing agent strong enough? If not, adjust accordingly. Second, does your epilator actually remove your hair from the root? If not, check the directions again and make sure that you followed them correctly. If that does not help, get another epilator. Third, did you have a garden of bikini bumps pop up after your first epilation? If so, this could just be normal and your skin could need time to adjust to epilating.
