Three Types of Dermabrasive Agents
A dermabrasive agent is any small-scale particle designed and contoured to create
a specific type of superficial wound to the skin in order to remove damaged skin.
Dermabrasive agents can be deep, mild or superficial depending on the
specifications of the microdermabrasion product.
Deep dermabrasive agents are fine particles with jagged, sharp
edges that create small wounds in the upper layers of the skin.
Additionally, deep dermabrasive agents are typically denser than
other agents which allows them to deliver greater, and thus more
penetrating, negative pressure to the skin.
Deep dermabrasive agents are ideal for severe skin damage like
acne scarring or deep wrinkles.
Examples of deep dermabrasive agents include:
- Pumice stone (fine)
- Apricot fine
- Crushed walnut shells
- Aluminum crystals
Mild dermabrasive agents are dense like deep abrasive agents, but lack
the jagged, sharp edges. Instead mild dermabrasive agents are ideal for
applying negative pressure to the skin, but the create less wounding to the
skin because the edges of these micro particles are generally round, or the
material easily dissolves into a rounded shaped when smoothed onto the
skin.
Examples of mild dermabrasive agents include:
- Coarse oat bran
- Strawberry seeds
- Jojoba beads
- Coarse rice bran
Superficial dermabrasive agents are light weight particles with round
edges that do not deeply penetrate the skin. Superficial dermabrasive
agents are ideal ingredients for maintaining the health of your skin once
you have removed damaged areas of your skin. Superficial dermabrasive
agents work by lifting up dead skin cells as the microdermabrasion product
is smoothed over the skin. These superficial dermabrasive agents “scrape”
away the upper most layers of the skin without creating mini-wounds in the
dermis.
Examples of superficial dermabrasive agents include:
- Colloidal (extra fine) oatmeal
- Colloidal rice bran
- Fine Adzuki bean
- Red and yellow sandalwood herb
